Praised for his "otherworldly flourish" (The Wall Street Journal) and "intense stage presence" (Classical Voice North America), Chinese countertenor Chuanyuan Liu is proving himself a strong presence amidst the new generation of countertenors.

In the 2022-23 season, Chuanyuan returns to Pittsburgh Opera for Ariodante (Polinesso), and to Toledo Symphony Orchestra for Handel's Messiah (alto soloist). Later in the season he appears in CCM Opera’s Agrippina (Ottone), Victory Hall Opera’s Orpheus and Erica: a Deaf opera (Amore; Orfeo cover), and in Aspen Opera Theater’s Bel Canto (César).  

The 2021-22 season provided a wonderful outlet for Chuanyuan’s passion for contemporary music, seeing him in three world premieres: In a Grove (The Priest/The Medium, Pittsburgh Opera); The Hours (Man Under the Arch/Hotel Clerk, The Philadelphia Orchestra); M. Butterfly蝴蝶君 (Song Liling cover, Santa Fe Opera).

A two-time National Semifinalist in the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, Chuanyuan has won awards from Opera Index, Camille Coloratura Awards, the Gerda Lissner Foundation, amongst others.
